Pen kalamkari is an ancient craft of free hand drawing done on cotton and silk. This is done using a tamarind pen with natural dyes & painstakingly filling colors by hand. The word Kalmakari is derived from persian word where Kalam means Pen & Kari refers to craftmanship. Motifs mostly drawn are floral, peacock, paisleys and scenes from hindu epics like Mahabharata and Ramayana.
Kalamkari in Srikalahasti ( Andhra Pradesh ) has been around for 200 years approximately. Unlike other places where this particular craft is practiced, artists in Srikalahasti retains the ancient techniques of dyeing which have been passed down from generations. As it is hand-painted/handcrafted, colour spread and irregularity in design is common, hence it won't be considered as damaged or defective.
